Europe’s history of migration has created strong and lasting links between people and their regions of origin. Roots tourism, also known as diaspora or ancestry tourism, celebrates these bonds through authentic experiences based on:
- Cultural heritage
- Family identity
- Local communities
It is a growing, sustainable sector capable of breathing new life into small businesses and rural destinations.
Despite its potential, roots tourism is virtually absent from VET training. There is a lack of dedicated curricula, practical tools, digital and narrative skills, pathways linking schools, local areas and communities.
