Europe’s history of migration has created strong and lasting links between people and their regions of origin. Roots tourism, also known as diaspora or ancestry tourism, responds to this connection by offering meaningful travel experiences focused on cultural heritage, identity and local communities. It represents a growing and sustainable alternative to mass tourism, supporting small businesses, rural areas and less-visited destinations.
Despite its high potential, roots tourism is still largely absent from vocational education and training. VET schools often lack dedicated curricula and tools to prepare students for this emerging sector, while the tourism labour market increasingly demands new skills combining sustainability, digital competencies, storytelling and community engagement.
At the same time, many rural and disadvantaged areas face depopulation, limited job opportunities and weak links between education and local development. There is a clear need for innovative training pathways that improve youth employability while promoting sustainable, community-based tourism models.
by integrating roots tourism into VET education, strengthening teachers’ and students’ skills, and fostering cooperation between schools, local authorities and tourism stakeholders to support sustainable territorial development across Europe.
